Psalm 76

Psalm 76^[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

¹God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.^(A)
²His tent is in Salem,^(B)
    his dwelling place in Zion.^(C)
³There he broke the flashing arrows,^(D)
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.^[b]^(E)

⁴You are radiant with light,^(F)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
⁵The valiant^(G) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;^(H)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
⁶At your rebuke,^(I) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot^(J) lie still.

⁷It is you alone who are to be feared.^(K)
    Who can stand^(L) before you when you are angry?^(M)
⁸From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared^(N) and was quiet—
⁹when you, God, rose up to judge,^(O)
    to save all the afflicted^(P) of the land.
¹⁰Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,^(Q)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.^[c]

¹¹Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;^(R)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts^(S) to the One to be feared.
¹²He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

Pharaoh’s Arms Are Broken

²⁰In the eleventh year, in the first month on the seventh day, the word of the Lord came to me:^(A) ²¹“Son of man, I have broken the arm^(B) of Pharaoh^(C) king of Egypt. It has not been bound up to be healed^(D) or put in a splint so that it may become strong enough to hold a sword. ²²Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt.^(E) I will break both his arms, the good arm as well as the broken one, and make the sword fall from his hand.^(F) ²³I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries.^(G) ²⁴I will strengthen^(H) the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword^(I) in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan^(J) before him like a mortally wounded man. ²⁵I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh will fall limp. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I put my sword^(K) into the hand of the king of Babylon and he brandishes it against Egypt.^(L) ²⁶I will disperse the Egyptians among the nations and scatter them through the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.^(M)”

John 16:25-33

²⁵“Though I have been speaking figuratively,^(A) a time is coming^(B) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. ²⁶In that day you will ask in my name.^(C) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. ²⁷No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me^(D) and have believed that I came from God.^(E) ²⁸I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”^(F)

²⁹Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.^(G) ³⁰Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe^(H) that you came from God.”^(I)

³¹“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. ³²“A time is coming^(J) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(K) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(L) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(M)

³³“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.^(N) In this world you will have trouble.^(O) But take heart! I have overcome^(P) the world.”
